It is filled with stories of the weird, wild, and crazy. Stories like that of Jonathon Trappe who traveled across the English Channel attached to 55 helium balloons. Or some bizarre (and disgusting) food facts like “For every 3 1/2 oz of product, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows a certain amount of alien material before taking action. This includes up to three rodent hairs and 60 insect fragments in chocolate, five fly eggs, and one maggot in tomato juice, and one rodent hair and 30 insect parts in peanut butter.” Blech! But it’s stories like that that kept me and my 16 yr. old flipping pages.

As I kid I went through a phase of really loving the Ripley’s believe it or not tv show. I was recently sent the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Strikingly True book to check out. The book is really big, at around an inch thick and over a foot tall. There’s a total of 254 pages.

Unlike the tv show, everything included in the book is true or real. Did you know that the biggest limo in the world can carry 40 passengers and is 70 ft long? Or that there is a dog in china who walks on two legs full time? Even when sitting, the dog squats on its back legs instead of putting its front legs down. The book is intended for kids but I must admit I found it fascinating myself. It’s a great book to just pick up and look at regardless of whether you have five minutes or an hour. You don’t feel like you have to read it from the first page to the last, and there are tons of images throughout the book.

Both features make this great book for “pulling in” those kids who are hesitant to read books. They don’t feel like they have to sit and read for so long that they get bored, and there are lots of neat things to look at. Sections include science, world, animals, body, transport, etc. In a way, the book can be quite educational in the sense that it informs us about the existence of people, diseases, animals, inventions, etc that we didn’t know existed, and it lets us know that certain things are possible that we thought were impossible. I think this would be a great book for kids or just those who are curious in general.

Escape artist and evangelist Anthony Martin performed a daring skydive from an airplane flying at 13,500 ft (4,115 m) over Illinois—wearing handcuffs that were locked to a chain around his neck and linked to leather cuffs fastened above each elbow. To add to the stunt’s death-defying nature, the safety device attached to his parachute that automatically deploys the chute at 700 ft (215 m) was turned off. Without this backup, he had just 45 seconds, while spinning to Earth at 180 mph (290 km/h), to free himself from the handcuffs and chains and to reach back to pull the release handle and activate the canopy.

Loaded with hundreds of full-color pictures and thousands of cool factlets, “Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Strikingly True” is one of those books you can rest assured kids will love to read because of the subject matter inside it.

What they’ll find in here will satisfy their curiosity and appeal to their sense of odd. Because this book is so browse-able, it fits any attention span and several reading levels (although — beware — some of what’s in here might be too scary for smaller kids). And because it’s the same Ripley’s you grew up with, this is one of those books you can get caught reading, too.

But kids will get the biggest kick out of it, so grab one for your young reader next time you’re out. For middle-schoolers and up, “Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Strikingly True” is a smart book to have.
